19th Century German Urn with Figural Handles

This large decorative urn is a striking example of hand-painted 19th Century German craftsmanship.

Description

This large decorative urn is a striking example of hand-painted 19th Century German craftsmanship, its generously

proportioned baluster body serving as a canvas for an abundant, naturalistic floral arrangement. Sprays of peonies, roses, and daisies in shades of coral, yellow, and white are rendered in loose, painterly brushwork against a soft blue-and-cream ground that fades gently from sky blue at the shoulder to warm ivory below, evoking an open-air garden setting.

The urn’s neck and foot are finished in a rich olive-gold glaze, banded with fine gilt foliate borders, while a pair of dramatic figural handles — cast with a stylized winged bird or griffin head at the upper terminal — rise from the shoulder in a bold scrolled form, adding sculptural presence to the piece.

The urn is raised on a matching pedestal foot decorated with a gilt beaded border.

With its large scale, vivid floral painting, and sculptural handles, this urn makes a striking decorative statement for a mantel, entry table, or pedestal display, well suited to a traditional or eclectic interior seeking a bold botanical accent.
