Description

Rare Pair of Art Nouveau Royal Dux pair of vases. H 36″

An unusually large and elaborate matched pair of

Royal Dux Bohemia Art Nouveau figural porcelain vases,

each standing approximately 36 inches (91.4 cm) high.

The complementary compositions incorporate partially draped female figures within highly naturalistic tree-trunk-form vessels enriched with molded foliage and floral elements. The upper portions terminate in elaborate pierced and reticulated branch-like rims, creating an unusually sculptural and architectonic form.

The subdued naturalistic palette, organic modelling, female figures, floral ornament and integration of the human figure into natural forms are characteristic of Royal Dux production associated with the Art Nouveau period.
The undersides bear the consecutive impressed numbers 10311 and 10312.

The consecutive numbering, together with the complementary designs, strongly supports their identification as companion models conceived as a pair.

Condition
From visual examination of the photographs supplied, the pair appears to be in exceptionally well-preserved condition for objects of this scale, age and complexity. No restoration, losses, cracks or major damage have presently been identified.

Provenance
Private collection, Montreal, Freda Besner Bronfman.
Acquired from the above by the present owner’s family and subsequently retained in a private collection in Ontario.

Royal Dux porcelain originated in the Duchcov (Dux) region of Bohemia, now the Czech Republic, with the company established in 1853. It became renowned for its high-quality ceramics, particularly its Art Nouveau and Art Deco pieces, often featuring allegorical figures and naturalistic designs. The brand is recognized for its distinctive pink triangle mark, often accompanied by a model number and the “Made in Czechoslovakia” inscription.

These vases exemplifies the Art Nouveau movement’s embrace of organic forms and idealized female figures, drawing inspiration from nature. The detailed sculpting of the tree, foliage, and the graceful depiction of the woman interacting with a flower are hallmarks of this era. Such pieces are highly sought after as decorative art objects, reflecting the aesthetic sensibilities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
