Description
Arts & Crafts / Mission-Style Slag Glass Hanging Lamp with Fleur-de-Lis Motifs
This antique hanging lamp is a fine example of early 20th century Arts & Crafts lighting, combining the movement’s signature geometric structure with richly colored slag glass. The shade is built in a hexagonal, angled panel form with a scalloped lower edge, giving the piece a strong architectural silhouette in keeping with the Mission aesthetic’s emphasis on honest, structural design.
Each panel is set with warm caramel-amber slag glass in the lower band and banded in vivid emerald-green slag glass along the upper crown, producing a rich, layered glow when illuminated — the marbled, opalescent quality characteristic of slag glass adds natural variation and depth to every panel. At the center of each face, an applied cast metal fleur-de-lis medallion in a warm bronze-brass finish provides the shade’s focal ornament, a motif frequently found on quality Arts & Crafts hall lanterns and hanging fixtures of the period.
The shade is trimmed throughout in a coordinating bronze-toned metal framework, with a crenellated crown edge at the top and a gently scalloped, cut-corner lower rim. It is suspended by its original-style link chain from a ceiling canopy, with a brass finial/socket cap at the top of the drop — allowing the fixture to be hung at the desired height for a dining room, entry hall, or den.
With its bold geometric panel structure, warm slag glass palette, and applied fleur-de-lis detailing, this lamp captures the Arts & Crafts movement’s blend of hand-craftsmanship and architectural form — a striking centerpiece for a period-appropriate interior or a warm, textural accent in an eclectic space.
