This handsome antique table lamp exemplifies the French Sèvres-style tradition of porcelain and ormolu decorative arts, popular through the latter half of the 19th century. The centerpiece of the lamp is a hand-painted reserve depicting a romantic courting scene: a gentleman and lady in 18th-century dress, seated together in a wooded landscape, rendered with soft, painterly detail in the manner of Sèvres pastoral genre painting. The reverse of the body carries the bleu celeste ground uninterrupted, allowing the porcelain color and gilt detailing to remain the visual focus from every angle.
