Description
French Bronze Five-Light Chandelier, c. 1900–1910, with Frosted Tulip Glass Shades
This elegant antique chandelier is a fine example of turn-of-the-century French bronze lighting, combining sculptural metalwork with softly glowing frosted glass. The fixture is suspended from an ornate bronze canopy and ceiling cap, with four decorative chains descending to a central bronze column — each chain link cast with foliate rosette detailing that continues the piece’s ornamental theme from ceiling to shade.
Four scrolled bronze arms extend outward and downward in a graceful acanthus-leaf curve, each terminating in a frosted, ruffled tulip-form glass shade with a softly fluted, hand-finished edge — a hallmark of quality French glasswork from this period. At the center, a fifth light rises from an open, ribbed bronze basket bowl, topped with a tall, flame-shaped frosted glass shade that echoes candlelight when illuminated, adding a striking vertical accent above the four surrounding arms.
The bronze throughout carries a warm, aged patina, with fine cast detailing on the arms, canopy, and central drop rod that reflects the craftsmanship typical of French decorative lighting circa 1900–1910. The combination of scrolled acanthus arms, frosted tulip shades, and a central flame finial gives the piece a balanced, symmetrical silhouette suited to a formal dining room, foyer, or parlor.
A beautifully preserved period fixture, this chandelier brings together sculptural bronze work and hand-finished glass in a form that has remained a classic of French turn-of-the-century design.
